I wore plain gentleman's cloths, I made no attempt to dress like a president. I certainly didn't wear the ceremonial sword that both of my predecessors had occasionally worn.
I rode my horse alone through the District of Columbia. In fact, I did much of the grocery shopping for the White House myself.
