The Epic of Gilgamesh is maybe western civilization's oldest book, dating to about 2150 BC. It's the story of a semi-divine hero, two thirds god and one third human, who goes on an epic quest for immortality. Moby Dick, published in 1851, is the story of a one-legged ship captain who goes in quest of the white whale that maimed him. Both are great journey stories. Both are about the restless of humankind, the quest for fame and immortality, the refusal of humans to accept the limits assigned to us by fate and biology.
