Robert Oppenheimer was a genius, one of America's first quantum theorists when he was chosen in 1942 by the U.S. Army to direct the building of the Atomic Bomb. At Los Alamos he brought the project in on time and under budget, and the "gadget," as he called it, worked on its first trial at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945. Oppenheimer became a national celebrity and the nation's leading scientific adviser, but less than ten years later he was stripped of his security clearance by the most paranoid figures of the Cold War. It's a true tragedy: Oppenheimer contributed to his own fall through some questionable personal behavior and what Aristotle called hubris.
